Overview
Shot as part of a photo shoot for multimedia artist Mr Gom (aka Gregor Marvel), I decided to film a few sequences in the background and in-between setups.
Production
Gregor is a talented fashion designer amongst many other multi-hyphenated talents and the choice of fashion wear really shows that in the styling of the shoot. Using a simple single soft light source (a Rotolight Anova II) fired through a huge diffuser, we got an amazing spread of detail across both Gregor’s face and his clothing.
Shot on the Black Magic Pocket Cinema 4K camera using a vintage medium format Pentax glass, the video resulted in a highly texturised detail, whilst diffusing the harshest of highlights.
Post Production
In what was a purely intended to be a camera and lens test, it quickly became obviousl there was a potential for a charming yet fast-cut vignette. Fortunately by shooting in Black Magic S-Log we were able to recapture all of the fine details in the shadow areas. In addition to this, by grading the footage on Davinci Resolve 16, we easily managed to get a deep yet uniform scarlet to the redness of Gregor’s facial make-up.
After completing the edit, we also found several takes that were too funny to leave on the cutting room floor, one of which we’ve added as an extra out-take here.
